Give your eyes a rest and have a digital detox

Fifers are being urged to give their eyes a digital detox after recent research showed the average person spends eight hours and 45 minutes a day on electronic devices.

Specsavers is teaching people how to protect their eyesight against potential digital damage following the new data from Ofcom.

It revealed that 15 million internet users have taken a ‘digital detox’ in a bid to strike a better life/technology balance. Following warnings about the potentially harmful effects of over-exposure to digital technology, including a deterioration in eye health, Specsavers stores across Fife are offering their top tips on how to limit the impact and protect your eyes.

These include: resting your eyes by regularly looking away from your computer screen, taking regular screen breaks and using adequate lighting.

Gary Wood, store director, said: “Over-exposure to a wide range of digital devices – particularly those used in close proximity to the face like computer screens, tablets or smart phones – can have a number of damaging effects on the overall health of your eyes.

Headaches, an inability to focus properly, sensitivity to light, very watery or very dry eyes and blurred vision are all common symptoms – and if left untreated, can develop into more serious, conditions. It’s really important to take the necessary steps to avoid straining the eyes when using digital technology. There’s lots of small changes you can make to give your eyes a break.”
