Glenrothes cashing in on Johnny - in paint & song

Country singing legend Johnny Cash may no longer be with us, but his spirit was certainly alive and kicking in Glenrothes this week.

For one of the Kingdom’s top Cash impersonators, local singer Tom Scott from East Weymss, had shoppers singing to the strains of Ring of Fire and Walk The Line, while members of the town’s art club captivated the public with a demonstration on how to commit the image of the superstar to canvas.

It was all part of the official launch of the Go Glenrothes campaign, an events initiative to help promote the town as part of the build up to 2018 and the 70th anniversary of when Glenrothes was formed.

“There’s a sense that we are finally up and running and getting some momentum behind us,” said c Leslie Bain, chairman.

“The Johnny Cash event, which has the potential to really grow into to something quite significant, is just one of a number of initiatives we have planned.’’

Budding artists will be playing their part with the ‘Portrait called Johnny’ drawing competition which will includes £500 of cash prizes, and will be judged by Johnny’s daughter Rosanne.

“We want to really build this up. It has great potential,” said Billy Caulfield, art tutor with Glenrothes Art Club, who is planning to take his demonstrations on tour to places including Edinburgh and Glasgow as part of a wider Go Glenrothes promotional drive.
