Declan McDaid (7) and Jack Farmer (8) walked 6K over the Forth Road Bridge and back last weekend in memory of Declan’s gran Margaret and great-grandmother, also Margaret.

And thanks to the support and generosity of their family and friends, the duo have raised a fantastic £670 so far.

Declan’s mum Karen told the Gazette: “We truly can’t believe how much has been raised.”

The boys had planned to walk 5K, after Declan told his mum he wanted to raise money for the charity following the sudden death of his beloved gran from heart disease last month.

In the end, the determined pair managed a full 1K over their target, and marked it by putting a love locket on the bridge in Margaret’s memory, and scattering the ashes of great-gran in Dundee, where Declan also placed his new British heart foundation medal on her plaque.

“It was a very emotional day and we are all super proud of Declan and his friend jack,” said Karen.

“I would like to thank everyone who has donated, it really is truly appreciated.”

Karen also thanked her colleaguesat Homebase for their support and generosity.

If anyone would still like to donate to Declan’s fundraising campaign they can do so by searching Karen McDaid on www.justgiving.com.

“We hope this can help others with heart problems. Declan is such a caring, thoughtful wee boy and we’re so proud – and I’m sure both great-gran and gran would be proud too.”
