The clean-up frequency of 92 per cent was the best in the country for that type of crime, said local Community Inspector, Tom Brown.

Detection rates locally remained high for other crime categories, he added, which might allay the worries of those who thought the area was blighted by high levels of offending.

CI Brown told Levenmouth Community Safety Panel last week there had been little threat recently from sneak-in thieves, bogus workmen or housebreakers, as these crimes were only economically worthwhile in certain cases.

Anti-social behaviour, fuelled by people drinking in public spaces, was down across the whole division, thanks to fixed penalties and the bad weather, although police expected a rise once the lighter evenings had set in.

As well as the local successes, CI Brown said Scotland was a forerunner in combating UK crime, because of close partnership work and referrals to other agencies during investigations.
