Lunch is served at Leuchars Station in aid of Fiji disaster

Leuchars Station held a fundraising lunch for the families of serving soldiers who were impacted by Cyclone Winston in Fiji.

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards has a strong Fijian community, with many having families that have been severely affected by the disaster, as have families from 2 Close Support Battalion Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

Funds raised at the lunch will be distributed equally amongst the station’s Fijian community to have a direct impact back at home.

Cyclone Winston was the strongest tropical cyclone to make landfall over Fiji on record.

Striking Fiji as a category five storm on February 20, Winston inflicted extensive damage on many islands and killed 43 people.

The total damage has been estimated at $1 billion.

The lunch was cooked in a traditional Fijian Earth Oven by the Fijian community, supported by military chefs,

Local farmer Harry Black and Farmers Free donated vegetables for the event, whilst meats were provided by local butchers and businesses.

Captain Christopher Pyman said he was delighted with the amount of £4700 raised on the day. “It went really well and everybody seemed to enjoy the food!”
