Flowers and a note were left in tribute to Sergeant Robert Smith, who died in World War One.

However, the gesture has left Blair Littlejohn, a member of the Dairsie War Memorial Hall committee, searching for answers.

“We don’t know anything about Robert Smith at all,” he said.

“I can’t find him.

“I want to find out who is.

“It’s important to remember these people.

“I think it’s right we recognise those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Blair conducted research to find out information about all the soldiers named on the memorial plaques, commemorating those who died in the world wars.

He used information from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and even old editions of the Fife Herald.
