New award forlocal schools' '˜unsung heroes'

Pupils, parents and staff who go ‘above and beyond’ stand to win Good Citizenship Awards, to be presented on an annual basis.

The scheme was launched last Thursday at Castlehill Primary School in Cupar, when local police were joined by Councillor Margaret Kennedy and members of the school’s pupil council.

It is designed to recognise people who demonstrate respect and integrity within their learning environment and who positively contribute to the activities that take place within its grounds.

Nominations will be invited from pupils and staff, with one overall winner being chosen from each establishment.

Engraved presentation shields will be given to the winners at the end-of-term assemblies.

PC Robert Crawford, who was instrumental in setting up the scheme, said: “This award is a great opportunity for the police to get involved with the local education establishments in a more positive and fun manner.

“The award will give some much-needed recognition to those who go that extra mile to supporting their school and community.

“The initiative has been created to maintain and improve the partnership working between educational establishments and the police.

“I have sourced funding for the awards and schools will have a shield that will last for about 12 years.

“Our aim is to get more involved with the schools, promoting good relationships between ourselves and the school, the children and the parents.

“Hopefully the idea will increase community spirit and uncover a few goodwill stories that may go unnoticed and not given the recognition they deserve.”

The scheme takes in all the schools and educational establishments within the Cupar and Howe of Fife and Tay Coast wards.
