Many workers were temporarily laid off, community facilities such as swimming pools and cinemas were closed, and sport was badly hit as floodlights were also dimmed.

The Press has a special feature looking back on how widely the strike impacted on businesses as well as households who stocked up on candles to ensure heat and light.

Our picture shows how one pub, the Novar in Kirkcaldy, continued to serve drinks by candlelight!
