The public flocked to Memorial Park in the town to enjoy the historic games from across the region to witness a full array of traditional and heavy sporting events which included the likes of hammer throwing and caber tossing, as well as cycling and and athletics contests.

Trade stalls, a fairground and a vintage farm tractor and vehicle displays completed the ever popular gathering.

June Innes, secretary of the organising committee, told the Gazette the event turned out to be a lovely occasion once again, despite the heavy morning downpour.

“We were once again fortunate with the weather, which was not looking likely in the early morning,” she said.

“It turned out to be a lovely afternoon weatherise which is always a bonus.”

“He’s been a big supporter of the event and was on hand to declare the gathering open,” she added.
