IT might not be everyone’s idea of home – but this toilet block is set to be turned into just that.

A Glasgow man has been granted planning permission to turn the former public convenience, set on James Street, Cellardyke, into a two-bedroom house.

It might take more than a touch of toilet cleaner to transform the vacant building (right), but the applicant, Stuart Ramsay, has grand plans to refurbish the building to include two bedrooms - measuring approximately 11 and eight square metres - a living room/kitchen and a separate bathroom.

The size of the building will not be altered and the existing doors, roof lights and cupola will remain. Two of six new traditional sash and case timber windows being installed are to be obscurely glazed to provide privacy to a neighbouring property.

As the toilet block was no longer used, planning officers told councillors at last Wednesday’s north east area committee meeting that the change of use was probably for the best, as it was likely its continued vacancy “would result in the deterioration of the condition of the building and, as such, a negative impact on the character of the conservation area.”

A report added: “The proposed conversion of the public toilet to a dwellinghouse would both protect and enhance the character of the conservation area by providing a sympathetic new use for an existing vacant property.”

However that didn’t stop the application attracting some criticism, with the Royal Burgh of Kilrenny, Anstruther and District Community Council and one neighbour objecting.

Mary Stewart, service manager for development management, added: “It is certainly unusual to have an application to convert a public toilet into a house but the plans were in keeping with the surrounding area and planning permission was granted, with conditions.”
