Restaurant review: The Gelato Box, Kirkcaldy

The sun has been shining this past week, and we all know what our bellies crave when that big yellow ball puts his hat on – ice cream.

The Gelato Box is the brainchild of the same folks who own Cupcake Coffee Box, and to make things just that bit more convenient, it’s also situated right next door in the Arches Centre (the former McDonalds).

Myself and a couple of Press colleagues couldn’t wait to try out their menu – which features ice cream supplied by the famous Janettas of St Andrews – so headed down Kirk Wynd just a few days after opening.

The place is kitted out like a 50s dinner, complete with booths and a working jukebox.

You can sit in or takeaway, and on this occasion we opted for one of the big comfy red booths along the back wall.

It’s a shame that it’s in the back of the centre, as there are no windows at which to sit and watch the world go by, but as mentioned, the takeaway option is there if you’d prefer to choose a bench outside and do some people watching.

Now on to the important stuff – the ice cream.

The menu is pretty extensive, and if we had a complaint, it would be the fact there is just too much to choose from!

There are four main things topick from: ice cream sundaes, ice cream milkshakes, waffles and pancakes.

Each of the sundaes has been specially created and given a funky name, such as the William Wallace, the Adam Smith Delight and the Lang Toun Boat (see menu for descriptions).

As for the milkshakes, you can choose from the staple vanilla, chocolate or strawberry, or create your own simply by choosing your favourite ice cream.

And as for the pancakes and waffles – why not go American and have crispy bacon and maple syrup, or try to make it healthy with your choice of ice cream, banana, strawberries or summer fruits, a sauce and cream.

I opted to create my own sundae, picking one scoop of salted caramel, one scoop of cookie dough and fudge sauce. It was the perfect size for me and not too sugary.

Colleague A went for the Robert the Bruce while Colleague B chose a waffle with a scoop of salted caramel, banana, toffee sauce and cream.

And the verdicts – clean plates all round. Each came well presented and at under a fiver for each, it’s not the cheapest, but on par with desserts on the menus of bigger chains.

There’s a great atmosphere inside, especially thanks to the free jukebox, where you can pick anything from pop to, in our case, Motorhead.

So while the days are sunny, or just to cheer yourself up when the rain returns, get down to The Gelato Box.
