With this in mind we thought we’d look at which of Fife’s attractions are ranked highest on the popular travel website Tripadvisor – the results are occasionally surprising.

5. Pittencrieff Park
Dunfermline's Pittencrieff Park scored high with reviewers for its sensory garden, formal gardens, greenhouses and peacocks. LizM59 wrote: "We are so lucky to have the beautiful Glen, as it’s known locally, on our doorstep. I have great memories of playing there as a child and now take my grandsons. 6. Craigtoun Country Park
Craigtoun Park, near St Andrews, has everything you need for a family park in its 47 acres, including a road train, crazy golf, boats, pedalos and pedal cars. Kirstin B wrote: "Fantastic park. Lots to see and do for all the family. Lovely food from the cafe. Staff all super friendly. This place was the highlight of our trip to the area." Photo: Canva
7. St Andrews Castle
Visitors to St Andrews Castle, which dates back to the 13th century, particularly enjoy seeing the 'bottle dungeon', a medieval prison cut out of solid rock. 8. Fife Coastal Path
The 116 mile Fife Coastal Path runs from Kincardine to Newburgh - from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Tay - and takes in rugged coastal landscapes, pretty fishing villages, ruined castles, tranquil woods and golden beaches. 715amyc wrote: "Wow! We walked 33 miles in three days, staying at B&Bs along the way. Coming from the California coast this walk was amazing. Around every corner was something new to look at, from ruins, views, to flora and fauna. Every beach was different and the paths are all varied." Photo: Canva
