Support appeal for Lundie library plans

Campaigners held a demo in the town when the library was under threat. Now volunteers will continue the provision with the new Largo Community Library from 2017.

There had been some confusion over the status of the library following the announcement in February that eight facilities across Fife would remain open for a further 12 months as plans to run them as community ventures in the future were discussed.

The plans did not include Lundin Links however, after a proposal from the community was apparently received after the deadline.

Campaigners have now confirmed however that Fife Council has accepted the proposal to run a new service, Largo Community Library, and Lundin Links library will continue to run as these plans are implemented over the next few months.

Heather Paterson, campaigner, said they wanted to make it clear to local people that the library was open for business until then – and in order for their community plan to work, they need the support of residents in the town.

Lundin Links library will close in February 2017.

Heather said: “The good news is that Fife Council has agreed that the new library can remain in the existing building in Lundin Square.

“We have a lot to do in the coming months so we are looking for local people and businesses interested in supporting this community initiative to get in touch.

“Lundin Links Library will continue to have the same opening times and offer the same services until next February.”

As part of those plans, volunteers have organised a meeting which will take place tomorrow (Thursday) at 10am.

The meeting will be an opportunity for people interested in finding out more about the new Largo Community Library to come along and see how they can help.

Lundin Links is one of nine towns in Fife which will now see library provision delivered in a different way, often by volunteers, after Fife Council approved Fife Cultural Trust plans to close 16 facilties across the Kingdom.

Colinsburgh, Crail, Pittenweem and East Wemyss are all to remain open until February next year while proposals are worked on by the community.
