Top award for Cupar's unsung hero Brynja ...

Young Scot has announced Brynja Duthie (15), from Cupar, as the winner of the Unsung Hero at the 11th annual Young Scot Awards 2016.

The Madras College pupil has raised over £7500 in the past three years for Movember in memory of her grandfather who died from prostate cancer.

Brynja has organised a charity fun run to raise cash for the Euan MacDonald Centre, who give communication aids to people with MND after her teacher Mr Grewar was diagnosed with the disease. The event raised more than £2000. The school girl, who spends her spare time as a volunteer for the Scouts, is also involved in the organisation of all her school’s charity events.

Brynja said: “I’m completely shocked, I really didn’t expect this. I’m so grateful to everyone that nominated me for this award.

“It feels amazing to be amongst such brilliant young people and the atmosphere here is incredible.”

The awards were hosted by Edith Bowman and attended by famous faces including the Only Way is Essex stars Jonathan and Chris Clark and actor Paul Brannigan.

Edith, who is from Anstruther spoke to Brynja at the awards. She said: “There is a wonderful connection in that the chair that Brynja’s teacher (Mr G) was given to deal with his illness, was bought and presented to him by my mum’s charity, The East Neuk Wheelchair Appeal.

“It’s amazing to see communities working towards the same goal of helping people and raising awareness on important personal issues. To see young people driven by help others and raise money is heartwarming and inspiring and should be celebrated.”
