Tributes paid to Dr Edward Fairlie

Dr Edward Fairlie, a well known consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology, who worked throughout north east Fife and Kirkcaldy, passed away on Monday, March 7, aged 90.

Born Edward John Fairlie on April 19, 1925 in London, he was one of seven children and first came to Scotland aged 15, when he was sent to live with an aunt in Dundee, to escape the London blitz.He would return north of the border in 1967 to work as an obstetrician in St Andrews based at Craigtoun Hospital.

In 1974 Elizabeth (Liz) arrived as a student nurse at Craigtoun. Romance blossomed and they were married in April 1975, setting up home in St Andrews. Children followed, with Martha arriving in January 1976, Daniel in 1977 and Thomas in 1983.

Unfortunately the marriage wouldn’t last and the couple separated in 1992.

In 1980 he was proud to have been elected to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetrics, travelling to London to receive the award, whilst away from work his passion was gardening and he spent many hours tending to his large garden at his home Cloverlea.

In 2005 he began to show signs of dementia and in 2007 moved into full time residential care in Glenrothes.
