Warm welcome for runner from Fife firefighters

Wayne Russell (34), embarked on his journey in memory of sister Carmel Webb who died at the age of 35 after a 10-year battle with a rare heart condition.

During his journey through Fife – to raise cash for the Superhero Foundation – he has received hospitality from stations in St Andrews, Methil and Burntisland.

Firefighters have welcomed Wayne in for the night to rest from his marathon days.

Wayne was inspired and motivated by Carmel who dedicated her life to fundraising for charities, even whilst battling with illness.

“During the run-up to Carmel’s funeral I started a Facebook page called ‘Carma’ (an amalgamation of Carmel and karma), where I carried out random acts of kindness in her honour,” Wayne explained. “Friends, family and strangers also took up the challenge and amazingly people as far away as Canada joined in the good deeds too.

“It was such a success that it inspired me to do more for charity. I had the idea to run the British coastline and decided to give it a go.

“It’s sadly too late to help my sister, but in true Carma style, I’ll be trying my best to help others live a better life.”

Wayne started running the country’s coast from the capital in September 2015, and aims to finish his run back to London in early July.

Lee Mahady, Burntisland Fire Station watch manager said while they were happy to help out Wayne, he did have a disturbed night as the team had to wake him three times for emergency call outs. He added: “We were just doing our bit to stop him from sleeping in doorways so the fire service opened their doors to give him somewhere to rest.”
