The teenager who died after an early-morning road crash near Kirkcaldy has been identified.

Brian Phimister, of Kirkcaldy, died at the scene after the BMW 3 Series car he was a passenger in crashed into a tree on the A955 between Dysart and the Coaltown of Wemyss around 12.50 a.m.

The 18-year-old male driver of the car suffered what police described as “serious injuries” and was taken to the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy for treatment.

It is understood the driver’s injuries, while serious, are not thought to be life threatening.

No other vehicles were involved.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Enquiries into the full circumstances surrounding this incident are ongoing and anyone who can assist road policing officers with their investigation is asked to contact police immediately.”

Two fire engines from Methil were also summoned to help police officers at the scene.

The road was closed this morning between the two villages, which meant drivers had to divert via the Standing Stane Road in either direction.
