£2.5m work to start at former St Andrews school

Work on a £2.5 million residential development at the site of a former independent school in St Andrews is set to get under way next week.

The developer for the project at the one-time New Park Preparatory School has officially appointed a main contractor, Seddon Construction Ltd. of Glasgow, to start the works’ programme on Monday with a completion date of 46 weeks.

The first phase will consist of the construction of eight three-bedroom/three bathroom luxury apartments and four three-bedroom/three bathroom maisonettes in two distinct blocks.

The contract will also include the renovation of the existing former schoolhouse at the site in Hepburn Gardens, which will be handed back to the New Park Education Trust.

Charlie Ferrari, property development consultant with Aberdeen-based C&L Properties Ltd, said that the contractor is also preparing the health and safety plan and the erection of security fencing for the tree protection proposals, while the firm’s bat expert, Beccy Osbourn from Direct Ecology, has already been on site to instal the bat boxes as approved under the bat licence.

He added: ‘‘The developer will ensure that the local residents’ association receives a short summary every month in respect of the progress on site.”

The school, which was founded in 1933, has lain unoccupied since 2005 when it merged with the independent St Leonards School in St Andrews to form St Leonards-New Park.
