5k in 50 days ... a New Year challenge

The very best of new starts to a new year was enjoyed at Bayview on Sunday with the launch of a 50-day sporting and charity challenge.

The chance to do something healthy and positive for yourself, your community and a charity you believe in has been impressively combined by East Fife Youth Academy (EFYA) – which is inviting people from across Levenmouth and the East Neuk to take 

The ‘5K in 50 days’ mission will see participants walking, running or cycling five kilometres every day for 50 days, or five kilometres 50 times, with a minimum of five times a week.

Entrants will be raising money for EFYA and also a charity of their choice, with the totals divided in half for each .

Around 70 people had signed up for the venture ahead of the weekend’s launch and there has been a good deal of interest in it from outwith the club.

Anyone can take part, reagardless of age, gender, ability or postcode, while they can operate alone or as part of a team.

Entrants can carry out their exertions on a treadmill or an exercise bike, or get out and about in the open air.

EFYA head Lorna McAuley said she and fellow organiser Debbie Marshall had been “overwhelmed” by the response to date.

The project was very much geared to the idea of a new start for a new year, offering another take on the emphasis after every festive season on people getting fit and trying to shed the extra few pounds they may have put on over Christmas.

Many valid causes were also set to benefit, with a broad assortment of charities chosen so far by the participants.

As well as gathering money for EFYA, nominated groups include the Chest, Heart and Stroke Association, MS Fife, cancer research groups and the premature baby unit at Kirkcaldy’s Victoria Hospital, among others.

The idea is to take a relaxed approach to exercise over the 50 days and not cram too much in too soon, said Lorna.

People can fit it in with their own lifestyles by mapping out their own 5K routes using mobile phone apps.

About 30 people turned up on the launch day, although many others who could not make it along on Sunday sent messages of support.

To the sounds of music from the tannoy, the group – regardless of whether they inteded to walk, run or cycle – tackled the equivalent of a 5K walk – 14 laps around the pitch at Bayview.

Children, adults and members of EFYA’s boys’ and girls’ football teams took part.

“Many people finished it in less than an hour, which was good, and there were kids taking part who were lapping some of the adults,” added Lorna. “A lot of very good charities are being used as well.”
