Patients and staff from doctors’ surgeries in and around Kirkcaldy have been thanked for helping to raise over £1300 for people whose lives were devastated by a typhoon in the Philippines.

Super typhoon Yolanda, known as Haiyan, caused devastation in the Visayan region of the Philippines last year, with the death toll exceeding 7000 and the infrastructure destroyed.

The area is home in the main to poor farmers and fishermen who were left destitute.

Worldwide appeals for aid brought many charitable organisations to the area, with the UK being the largest donor.

Susan Gallacher, a Philippine-born woman who works as a nurse practitioner in Kirkcaldy, wanted to do something to help the people in her homeland and set up ‘A Plea For Help’ campaign, asking 13 Fife GP practices to take collection boxes.

In addition to having a box, staff at Bennochy Medical Practice held a home baking event, helped by Barry Scott, a lecturer at the former Adam Smith College. Friends and colleagues also gave personal donations to the appeal, helping towards the total.

Proceeds were divided among two charities – the DEC Philippine Typhoon Appeal and The Tzu Chi Foundation, Tzu Chi Foundation a Buddhist-run organisation which Susan and her husband Bryan saw at work in Manila last summer and were very impressed with.

She explained: “We are not Bhuddists but we felt that they would make good use of the contributions that everyone made.

‘‘My husband personally took the money to them on a visit to Manila in February, and presented it at the Tzu Chi headquarters in Quezon City on behalf of the people of Fife.”

A Kirkcaldy based Filipino group, Phil-Scot Fife has also been fundraising, and a valentine dinner at the Windsor Hotel collected around £700, for the British Red Cross.

Susan added: “On behalf of the Filipino people, I would like to thank all the staff at Bennochy, and the others who participated for their great support, and the people of Fife for their compassion and generosity.”
