Anger at Kirkcaldy war memorial vandalism

The steps leading up to the memorial were sprayed at the end of last month and the incident was reported to Fife Council by a member of the public.

Staff at the local authority were dispatched immediately to clean it up and the move was praised by Kirkcaldy East councillor Rod Cavanagh, who represents the council in its dealings with the military.

Cllr Cavanagh welcomed the quick response from the local authority but said he was ‘utterly appalled and dismayed’ about the vandalism.

The SNP member said: “I applaud the council for their swift response but I was utterly appalled and dismayed. It was an outrageous act of mindless vandalism and showed utter contempt for those who gave their lives on our behalf.”

Angus Thomson, Fife Council’s senior catering and cleaning manager said: “We do our best to clean public property and often rely on people reporting graffiti – which can be done online.

“Unfortunately we have limited resources to tackle the issue, so we have to prioritise the work. However, if the graffiti is offensive or, as in this case, desecrating a war memorial we will do our best to respond to reports within 24 hours.”
