£250,000 worth of vital repairs to busy St Andrews road could be delayed

Fife Council is caught between a rock and a hard place over the bone-shaking state of one of the busiest roads in St Andrews. Abbey Street on to Abbey Walk is pitted with pot-holes and rutted with runs of gouged-out road surface which are hazards for cars and potentially lethal for cycles and motorbikes.

The council has committed to making repairs, but will not do the work until building and utility work is completed on a neighbouring site – and that could take up to six months.

Hepburn Gardens, Pipeland Road and Bogward Road are also in serious need of road repairs.

Councillor Brian Thomson is pushing for planned resurfacing works to happen as soon as possible.

He said: “I know – from driving and cycling along them myself – that cyclists often have to cycle in the middle of the carriageways to avoid the potholes. I’ve been advised the schemes are currently being worked up by a design team, and I’m awaiting confirmation of the start dates.”
