Awards for Leven's young citizens 2016

Beth Milloy of Buckhaven High School and Amber Strachan of Kirkland High School received the award at the Rotary Club’s recent celebration of young people.

The award judges felt that both girls had demonstrated a true sense of community and citizenship.

The work of both girls in volunteering, as Platinum Active School Ambassadors, and their work with local youngsters were just some of their achievements recognised by the award.

Beth, who will be first school captain at the new Levenmouth Academy, has already racked up 500 volunteering hours and is well on her way to completing 1000 hours.

She coaches sports a school holiday camps, trains the junior basketball team, and runs a dance class for children in her school’s Additional Support Department.

She also finds time to teach early stages ballet at her local primary school in Kennoway, helps at the Saturday club with multi-sports and arts and crafts.

Beth also runs drama workshops at the Collision Youth Theatre in Buckhaven.

Amber was described as “energetic, enthusiastic and extremely hardworking.”

She promotes physical activity and sport in the local cluster primary schools and in the planning and execution of many sports related events at Kirkland HS.

Amber also leads breakfast, lunch and after school gymnastics at local primary schools.

She is a qualified gymnastics coach and is a member of the Enigma Gymnastics club and has competed at national level and takes an active lead in looking after the younger members of the club. Amber travelled to Sweden recently to enhance her coaching skills.

Amber is an active committee member of the Rose Queen gala in Leven and regularly performs in, and choreographs school shows.

She is a Senior Buddy at school and uses her undoubted communication skills with empathy and understanding as she mentors some of the most challenging S1 pupils and spends time with them in the Support Centre.

And her love of animals has led her to volunteer at veterinary surgery and on her aunt’s farm.

Liz Anderson, voted Fife Sports Personality of the Year 2015 by readers of the Fife FreePress Newspaper Group, was guest speaker and the Rotary event, and she presented Amber and Beth with certificates and cheques to mark their achievements.
