Police officers arrived at a block of flats in West High Street, and sections were blocked off as an inquiry got underway.

They were responding to a report of concern for a child, but few details have been released since then.

The baby has been under the care of medics since Sunday.

Confimring the tragic news, in a statement issued through Police Scotland, her family said: “Hayley is a beautiful baby girl who was loved by everyone who met her and we, as a family, wish to be left alone to grieve at this difficult and trying time.”

Police Scotland said its investigation was on going.

A spokesman added: “A thorough and rigourous investigation is ongoing as officers progress with inquiries into Hayley’s death. A post mortem examination is to be arranged.”
