When forestry and firewood specialist Stuart Provan took delivery of tree trunks too big to process, he decided to grin and bear it.
Or at least carve out a new market with five-foot high wooden bears - among other animals - and now his handiwork is popping up throughout the East Neuk, including Colinsburgh Filling Station and East Neuk Caravans, Anstruther.
“We had a delivery of Douglas Fir trunks that were too big for the machines,” said Stuart, who runs SD Provan from Balcaskie Estate with son Ryan.
“It’s beautiful wood and it just seemed a shame to have to chop it up.”
He had seen examples of carved bears on trips to Canada - wife Dodi is from Alaska - and after doing a bit of investigation, he had a go.
He shortly found his creative talent and rabbits and birds were soon joining the repertoire.
Now Ryan is also a dab hand, taking on the smaller, cuter bears.
“At first we just put them out to advertise the business but people have been taking an interest and we were asked to display them, and make bunnies and chicks, for Kellie Castle’s Easter weekend,” said Stuart.
