Brave Fife boy with cancer puts his best foot forward for charity

Toby Etheridge (11) will be joined by friends and family on Sunday to walk the Tay Road Bridge both ways in aid of Toby’s Magical Journey, a charity set up by his parents to provide support for Fife families affected by childhood cancer.

At almost a mile-and-a-half long, the bridge poses a tough test for Toby, who hasn’t been well enough to attend his school, St Columba’s Primary in Cupar, for several weeks.

As well as undergoing gruelling cancer treatment, he was also struck down by norovirus, which put him in hospital for a week and weakened him even further.

Nevertheless Toby’s mum Alison says he’s still smiling and keen to do his bit to help youngsters going through a similar ordeal.

“Since starting treatment Toby has suffered with his walking, specifically for long distances,” she said.

“Toby wants to prove that living with cancer will not stop him from doing things so he has decided to walk the Tay Road bridge to help raise much needed funds for others like him.”

As well as Sunday’s sponsored walk, there are a number of other fund-raising events lined up, including ‘Paw Patrol’ breakfasts on April 8 and 9. a family spring fair on April 15 and Toby’s Second Magical Ball on May 6.

Toby’s three-mile challenge starts on Sunday at 11am.
