But the visit was ruined after the little one’s brand new school shoes were left ‘caked’ in dog poo – with some of it even going on her legs.

Amy said: “I was absolutely livid that dog owners would leave their dog’s mess in a kids play park for kids to stand in.

“It’s not the first time that I have seen dogs’ dirt in there and it always smells of it but I don’t think enough is beingdone to prevent this.”

She added: These lazy pet owners shouldn’t get away with it. If I wanted to clean up dog mess I would get a dog of my own instead of having to clean up my poor four-year-old little girl because of someone else’s ignorance.”

Councillor David Graham told the Mail: “It’s disgraceful that dog owners are allowing their dogs to foul in a children’s play area.

“I would urge anyone who has issues with dog fouling should be contacting the Local Office at Methil who shall take the issue up on their behalf.”

Environmental charity CLEAR said dog fouling was not just an issue in Buckhaven, but across the Levenmouth and wider Fife area.

A spokesman for the charity said: “We see many responsible dogowners carefully picking up after their pets so it is clearly a small minority of dog-owners that do not care less about fouling public spaces.

“Going out without waste bags or claiming there is no bin nearby are not valid excuses for others.

“I don’t know whether they realise that, as well as spoiling playparks and streets for everybody else, handling dog waste can lead to serious illness for children.”

If you have a complaint about dog fouling call Fife Council on 03451 550022.
