Bullseye for Glenrothes - thanks to championship darts fans

While some of the world's best darts players were aiming for '˜double top' this weekend, hoteliers and local businesses were also hitting the bullseye.

For Glenrothes was the centre of the darting world by hosting the prestigious British International Championship, and the deluge of spectators it attracted proved to be a huge economic boost for the town.

Rumours that there wasn’t a room to be had in the region were not exaggerated as hotels and guest houses put up no vacancy signs as a result of all three days of the tournament being completely sold out, months in advance.

In fact queues were forming outside the CISWO Club, at 8.30am on both Saturday and Sunday an hour ahead of doors opening.

“It’s been a huge undertaking to organise such a big event, but as well as proving to be Scotland’s biggest tournament on this year’s British Darts Organisation (BDO) circuit, it’s now really cemented Glenrothes as a regular go-to destination, “ said Moria Murray from Scottish Darts Association and one of the principle organisers.

And Moria said the town is set to reep further rewards once the club relocates to bigger premises later this year.

“The town is firmly established, the fans like coming here and the players love it because of the fantastic atmosphere,” she explained.

“With a 550 plus capacity main room once the new venue is completed, it will allow us to stage even bigger and more high profile tournaments.”

The event also proved a lucrative one for the host venue, with early estimates of over £30,000 in bar takings from the event. The venue also served over 600 meals during the weekend. “We’re set up for this type of event now and things will only get better once we are in the new venue – that can’t come quick enough,” David Nelson, CISWO Club secretary.

The event certainly proved popular with senior players, Ross Montgomery, Scotland captain who said the success was further proof that the sport was on the up, while three time BDO World Champion, England’s Martin Adams added: “The atmosphere has been electric, I love playing here – we are so well looked after, and there is lots of good natured banter with the crowd. You can’t beat it.”
