A modest Burntisland community champion has dedicated her award to the hard-working committee she works alongside.

Burntisland Community Award Winner 2013, Frances Allan, who was told of her honour on Hogmanay, says she couldn’t have done her work without the committee behind the town’s Over 70s Christmas Treat.

Frances (61), of Bolam Drive, Burntisland, was nominated for the prestigious award - presented annually by the town’s Community Council - by colleague Morag Douglas who is a member of the nine-strong committee which organises the annual festive treat for around 150 elderly residents.

Speaking to the Press this week, Frances said: “The first I knew about winning was when Alex McDonald, chairman of the Community Council tracked me down on Old Year’s Night.

“I was a bit overwhelmed when I was told as I feel I am only one of a committee which helps organise the annual treat. I feel I have been given this on behalf of the whole committee.

“I feel really honoured and proud.”

Frances, a retired financier with the Royal Mail, has been organising the treat for around 15 years, and been the group’s treasurer for 13.

She explained: “It’s not just about organising the event.

‘‘There is a lot of fundraising that goes on throughout the year from afternoon teas and coffee mornings to quiz and comedy nights to get the money to put on the treat.

“We are very lucky in Burntisland that we get good support from local businesses, including the Kingswood Hotel which has hosted it for the past few years. It can sometimes feel like a toil, but when you see them enjoying themselves it’s all worthwhile.

“We’re always looking for new members and anyone interested in helping out can contact me on (01592) 872092.”

Alex McDonald, chairman of Burntisland Community Council said: “This has been a feature of life in Burntisland for many decades and Frances has been a key person for the last 15 years.

“She is tireless in helping to fundraise and plan the logistics so that everything comes together seamlessly.

“Her efforts are greatly appreciated not only by the 150 people who attend, but also by colleagues on the committee.”
