Burntisland station group to seek share of Â£300m funding

The group want proper disablead access to be installed at Burntisland station.

Campaigners calling for improved access at Burntisland train station have told the Press it is unacceptable for one of Fife's busiest stations to not have suitable access for wheelchair users as well as those with prams and heavy luggage.

That’s the message to Transport Scotland following the first meeting of Burntisland Station Steering Group which gathered this week to discuss the issue .

The group, chaired by Ben Barron from the Burntisland Community Development Trust, and including members from local community groups, as well as the three local councillors, is to seek a share of the estimated £300m UK Government currently earmarked for station improvement.

Mr Barron said the initial meeting had proved a positive one.

“It’s reassuring to know that the desire for improved station facilities is so widely supported by the community,” said Mr Barron.

“With nearly 230,000 people using Burntisland station it’s the most used in the whole of Fife of those that doesn’t have disabled access.

“Cupar, which has much less footfall has already received improvements so our argument is that Burntisland should be fairly treated.”

Cllr Kathleen Leslie added: “Transport Scotland has indicated that Burntisland does not meet the criteria for an upgrade and I’m seeking the rationale for this,”

“I am though encouraged at the enthusiasm of the group to really work together and address this.”
