It has been claimed that the litter problem at Fife Central Retail Park is so bad that it is attracting rodents.

The walkway which stretches from Sainsbury’s is covered in litter, with even more scattered heavily through the bushes next to the path.

One man who uses the walkway regularly says he has seen what looked like a rat in amongst the rubbish, just yards from two major food retailers.

Stuart Dalglish said: “The mess has been like that for many months. I saw an animal in the bushes at the ramp up and down to Chapel Level with a long thin tale – it appeared to be a rat.

“Fife Retail Park and retailers have a duty to public health and wellbeing.”

A spokesman for retail park owner Hammerson said the area is not its responsibility, but added: “We are aware of the issues raised and are working proactively with retailers to ensure that any waste in the public realm is cleared as quickly as possible.”

A spokesman for Sainsbury’s said: “We are speaking to the owner of Fife Central Retail Park to find a long-term solution. Our colleagues are continuing to monitor it in the meantime.”
