PEOPLE in Kirkcaldy are being invited to take a step back in time and relax ...
Professional therapist Elaine Dall is welcoming locals to her peaceful haven in The Merchant’s Garden, based at the town’s harbour.
As well as being a Fairtrade coffee and gift shop, The Merchant’s Garden also offers a range of therapies upstairs in Merchant’s House.
The beautiful therapy room has many original features which have been restored by the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust and many clients feel as if they have stepped back in time when they are receiving their treatments.
Elaine (42), who is a clinical hypnotherapist, set up her own business there two years ago.
She started off as a therapeutic counsellor with Fife Alcohol Support Service 12 years ago and has trained in various other therapies, developing her skills over the years.
The former Sinclairtown Primary and Viewforth High pupil said she had been looking for the perfect premises when she discovered the Merchant’s House building was available: “When I found out it was for hire I had to come and see it,” she said. “I remembered the building from when I was young. I started off in one of the smaller rooms doing reiki and hypnotherapy. I then started offering holistic and spiritual workshops here when the Celtic Sanctuary closed down. They had previously been running some classes and workshops there and I felt it was important they continued to be offered in Kirkcaldy. When they closed, I asked their permission to continue the workshop/classes side of things by providing a venue for yoga and mindfulness amongst others and they agreed.
“The rooms in Merchant’s House lend themselves beautifully to doing workshops and classes and when they started to become more and more popular, it made sense for me to hire out the second floor space in its entirety, moving from the smaller office.”
There are a number of therapists who offer various treatments in Merchant’s House. These include: NLP; Emotional Freedom Techniques, Reiki, SourceSTAR, Reconnective Healing, Angel Healing, Bowen Technique, Crystal Healing, Reflexology, Massage, Indian Head Massage and Hypnotherapy. Workshops are also available along with therapy taster sessions and regular classes for yoga, meditation, Reiki shares and weekly meetings of the Shamanic Circle and Theosophical Society.
In the spring when Elaine found out the lease for the coffee shop was available, she jumped at the chance to take it over: “I opened the coffee shop in the last week of May/start of June and I have had lots of help from the therapists. Having the shop complements the therapies upstairs.
“It allows clients to have somewhere to sit and relax after their treatments but it is also ideal for people, who aren’t necessarily spiritual or interested in the therapies, to come in and have some peace over a coffee, whether that’s inside the shop or in the courtyard at the back.”
The shop also sells Fairtrade gifts, books and arts and crafts made by local artists.
Elaine added: “I’m really chuffed to be working in one of Kirkcaldy’s oldest buildings, it’s beautiful. The more people we can get in to see it and celebrate a piece of the town’s history the better. We want to offer people a place where they can have some quiet time to themselves and relax in peaceful surroundings.”
