Two Thornton eateries are celebrating after success in food awards.

Serendipi-Tea was named the best cafe in central Scotland at the 2018 Food Awards Scotland, after being one of the finalists last year.

Meanwhile, the Fish Hoose was announced as one of the best two fish and chip shops in Scotland.

Just two Scottish establishments made it into the UK top 20 shortlist for the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award – the Fish Hoose and Lows Traditional Fish & Chip Shop in Westhill.

Over the coming weeks the shops will undergo a further phase of mystery diner judging inspections in order to whittle the UK top 20 down to a UK top 10 shortlist, before the final stage of judging held in London in January 2019.

For Serendipi-Tea, this was the first time staff have tasted success.

Owner Fiona Buchan said she worked harder and tried to improve following her finalist position last year.

Describing the moment she won, Fiona said: “It was really exciting and overwhelming.

“I hoped it would be good news, but I didn’t expect to win.”

To celebrate and thank the customers for their support, the cafe gave out free slices of cake and offered discounts on Friday and Saturday.

Fiona added: “I would like to thank the staff. They are so good and so loyal. And I’d like to thank the customers and the village.

“They really embraced the shop when it opened. Everyone has been so welcoming.”
