Call for action as cars attacked in Kirkcaldy

Michael Elder (27), wife Sheryl, who is expecting their second child, and one-year-old Kaleb, have lived in the Craigmount area for three years.

Michael said there was no sign of trouble until last October when the vandalism first began.

“We have two cars which we park in the shared area in front of our house,” he said.

“When they first got scratched we reported it to the police twice.

“We held off getting the cars repaired as we planned to do it on our insurance. I thought if it was kids then they would eventually get bored, but it’s happening too frequently .

“We don’t have gangs of teenagers wandering about at night, it’s all primary school children around here.”

The trouble seemed to have stopped so Sheryl put her car in to be repaired and was given a courtesy vehicle. It too has now been vandalised.

Michael said: “They’ve now attacked Sheryl’s courtesy car so that’s probably going to cost us money to get that repaired.

“Every single panel on it was scratched - and it’s the same with mine.

Michael said his neighbour’s cars have also been damaged but it’s their own vehicles which seen to be taking the brunt.

“We’ve never had an argument with anyone here, we haven’t made any enemies. I just can’t see a motive.

“Nobody’s seen anyone doing anything. You end up doing the most ridiculous things - I go and check the cars last thing at night and then again first thing in the morning.

“We’ve had friends’ cars scratched when they’ve come to visit, the same has happened to our neighbours.”

Michael is now calling on Fife Council to install CCTV and also says that installing railings around the car park area would act as a deterrent.

“We both work hard and don’t bother anybody so this is so frustrating.

“It’s got to the stage that I’m wanting to sell up and move.”

Councillor Neil Crooks says he has sympathy for Michael and Sheryl and says he finds the situation puzzling.

“It’s very unusual for cars to be vandalised continually like this and I hope the culprits are caught soon.

“If the police feel that installing CCTV is the best course of action to take then I’d certainly give that my backing.”
