Call for safer crossing on busy Methil road

Jackie Brown said the crossing, situated right outside Woodlands Nursery, is regularly ignored by drivers, posing a huge danger to the dozens of parents and children crossing the busy Methilhaven Road.

She said: “A lot of the time, you try to cross and cars don’t even stop. On one occasion a woman heading towards Leven nearly hit my four-year-old.

“There are a number of mums at the nursery with concerns about this, but when I phoned the council, they told me there wasn’t any money for a new crossing. Does someone have to be hurt or killed for something to be done?”

Her comments were echoed by Councillor John O’Brien, who witnessed the dangers of the crossing for himself.

“I watched a couple approach the crossing, and while a van on one side stopped, another one zoomed right over in front of them. I caught it on camera and have passed the evidence to the police who say they will act.

“In my opinion, zebra crossings are out of date, and this one needs to be updated to a red-light crossing.”

Ian B Smith, Lead Professional, Traffic Management (Mid Fife), said: “We have discussed the operation of the zebra crossing with Police, and they have visited the nursery to discuss the concerns with parents. They will also be monitoring the behaviour of drivers to help ensure they stop when pedestrians are on the crossing.

“The potential for additional work at the crossing will be discussed with Ward Councillors as part of the discussions on the next Area Transportation Works Programme.”
