Sir Menzies Campbell MP and Councillor Tim Brett recently visited the Fishermen’s Mutual Association at Pittenweem, where they received an update on the various issues and challenges facing the fishing community.
Cllr Brett, the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for north east Fife, said later that it had been good to learn shellfish prices were steadier and that the local fleet seemed to be holding its numbers.
“It was also interesting to hear how the role of the Fishermen’s Mutual Association has developed from auctioning white fish to marketing shellfish and how there may yet be a need for further change,” he added. “Making more direct contact with seafood buyers around the world may, by necessity, be the way ahead for the co-operative.”
Cllr Brett said he looked forward to further discussions on issues affecting the local fishing industry.
