The blaze happened just before 9am after a silver coloured Seat Alhambra, understood to be carrying a group of five tourists from the United States, on their way from St Andrews to North Berwick on a golf outing, pulled over at the junction with South Feus.

A man taking his son to the nearby primary school explained how he saw flames underneath the vehicle and pointed them out to the people inside who just had time to vacate the car and grab their golf clubs from the boot before it exploded into flames.

The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes, leaving the vehicle a burnt out shell.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire Service said: “We received a call just before 9am to say that a vehicle was on fire on the main street in Upper Largo. One appliance attended and extinguished the blaze. Nobody was hurt.”

Police kept traffic travelling from three different directions back for around an hour while the incident was dealt with and the vehicle removed.
