Community unites in support of popular Madras teacher '˜Mr G'

Following the mammoth success of the first Mr G’s Fun Run in 2015 the team faced a challenge to repeat the success but with the help of the sun, enthusiastic volunteers and a host of people willing to throw on some running shoes, the event raised almost £6000.

And the St Andrews community did not miss a chance to support Madras pupil Brynja Duthie, the driving force behind the event.

Donald said: “Huge thanks to everyone who contributed again in so many different ways. Once again the Madras/St Andrews community has proved to be very special.”

In total 52 children and 270 adults ran with a surprising medal award to the youngest ‘runner’ – nine-month-old Chloe, daughter of Ian Gaunt, deputy director of business and operations at the University Sport Centre, who completed the race in her pram!

The event was generously supported by Kilrymont S3 pupils, members of the community and local companies including the R&A, Tunnock’s and Thorntons Law.

“It was another beautiful occasion on so many fronts: a community coming together to celebrate and recognise someone they respect, admire and want to help in his hour of need. It was also a family occasion with everyone milling around and enjoying each others company. I personally feel it is also fitting that we are celebrating someone in life when all too often we do it when they aren’t around to see or appreciate the adoration and impact they have had on the many people they have supported or touched in life,” said Charmaine Duthie, Brynja’s mum.

Adding poignancy to the event was the arrival of Donald’s wife’s family, Jill, Mark and their daughter Ari who flew in from America and brother John and nephew Tom from Glasgow.

The money raised will go directly into the research of motor neurone disease being undertaken by Dr Gareth Miles at St Andrews University, who also ran in support of the cause on Sunday.
