Councillor condemns actions of vandals who targeted Leslie cemetery

Councillor John Wincott, a resident of the town, said: “Vandalism of any sort is always senseless but in this case it is also totally contemptible.”

“For someone to vandalise headstones in a cemetery just defies belief.

“This will obviously be deeply upsetting for those directly affected, but it is also a blow for the people who live in Leslie who are proud of their town.”

Police appealed for information yesterday (Monday) following the mindless vandalism of 65 headstones over the weekend (May 28-29).

Inspector Joanne McEwan, of Glenrothes police station, said: “This sort of incident causes a great deal of distress to families who’ve lost loved ones, and will no doubt be met with shock and sadness in the village and wider community.

“This is a truly deplorable act of vandalism and we are appealing to anyone who has any information that would help our enquiries, please speak to a police officer.

“I’d urge anyone who saw or heard anything unusual at the cemetery to contact us.”
