Chip shop boss handed road ban

Andrew Smith, assistant manager at the award-winning Anstruther Fish Bar, was caught on the A92 just outside Dundee.

He had crossed the Tay Road Bridge in to Fife before accelarating his Volkswagen Polo GTi to 116mph in less than a mile between the bridge and Forgan Roundabout.

Fiscal depute Nicola Gillespie said that shortly before the roundabout he was clocked by two cops with a roadside radar gun.

She said: “The weather was dry and the traffic moderate.”

Smith (24) of Taeping Close, Cellardyke, pleaded guilty to a charge of speeding committed on the A92 in north-east Fife on October 28 last year.

Chris Sheridan, defending, said: “He was in Dundee buying an outfit for his birthday night out.

“He wasn’t in any rush to get home - he was surprised when he heard the speed.

“He works in the family business where he is an assistant manager.

“This will cause some inconvenience with work where he is one of only two members of staff who drive.

“This was obviously a danger to himself and others.”

Sheriff Alastair Carmichael banned Smith from driving for three months and fined him £600

He said: “You can’t carry on driving like this - you put other people in danger.”
