Drug addict tried to steal £1200 of items from shop

Lisa Carcary, 30, of Kidd Street, Kirkcaldy, appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

She admitted that on May 23 last year at Debenhams, Kingsgate Centre, in Dunfermline, she stole cosmetics and clothing.

Depute fiscal Azrah Yousaf said staff at the store had become suspicious at the actions of Carcary and a male companion.

The pair were observed on camera and Carcary took the items into the changing rooms.

“They were watched on CCTV. She went to the make-up aisles and put items in her basket then put clothing on top,” added the depute.

“She then went to the changing rooms where she spent a long time attracting more attention and suspicion from staff.”

When it became clear her efforts were not going to work, she left the items in the changing rooms but she was found to have removed the security tags

which were in her bag.

When cautioned and charged, she said, “Not all of it was taken.”

The total cost of the items she tried to steal was £1210.75.

Defence solicitor Doug McConnell said that Carcary had now attempted to move on from the incident after becoming involved with drugs.

“She had a drug addiction problem at that time. She’s now on methadone and is in employment. She is moving forward and this offence was committed a really low point when she had also been in custody.”

Sheriff Alastair Brown told Carcary, “I have concerns about your record but I’m told that it looks like you are turning a corner. I hope that is the case and I’m going to take a chance with you.

“You could be admonished but if you do not stay out of trouble then this was a lot of stuff that you were trying to steal.”

“I can’t even remember it,” said Carcary from the dock.

Sentence was deferred until March 10 for Carcary to be of good behaviour.
