Fife man admits punching hospital doctor

Rhys Wood, of Carfrae Drive, Glenrothes, appeared via video link from prison before Sheriff James Williamson at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court.
Wood, 30, admitted on February 11, 2020 at Ward 2, Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline, he repeatedly punched an employee there on the head, knocking him to the ground and repeatedly striking him on the neck with a pen all to his injury.

Hide AdThe Procurator Fiscal Depute told the court: “The accused stood up and went for the doctor and punched him on the face several times causing him to fall to the ground.
"Other staff made their way to the room. The accused went for a pen he had up his sleeve and began hitting the doctor around the neck.
"The accused was pulled off him.
"There was a soft puncture wound to his neck but no serious injury. The matter was reported to the police.”
Wood’s defence lawyer said his client had been admitted for psychiatric care but had received no further follow up due to restrictions as a result of the pandemic.

Hide AdHe said a community payback order could be an alternative to custody, but added: “Mr Wood knows that there are very limited choices.”
Sheriff Williamson continued the case until March 1 to allow for the preparation of a Criminal Justice Social Work report and remanded him in custody meantime.
