Man jailed for pushing knife through letterbox and making threats at police station

A man who made violent threats, pushed a knife through a letterbox in Kirkcaldy, and uttered more violent threats at the town police station has been jailed for 18 months.

Michael Ritchie, described as a prisoner at Perth Prison, appeared before Sheriff James Williamson at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court.

Ritchie, 31, admitted that on October 21 last year, at an address in Sutherland Place, Kirkcaldy, he behaved in a threatening manner by pushing a knife through the letterbox, repeatedly shouting, swearing and making threats of violence.

He further admitted on the same date at Kirkcaldy Police Station in St Brycedale Road he repeatedly shouted, swore and uttered threats of violence.

Ritchie’s defence agent said his client has a history of mental health issues and that substance misuse had exacerbated this, but that it was his intention to now stay clean. Sheriff Williamson said: “Given the background to this offence I am not persuaded that I can deal with this matter other than by a custodial sentence.”
