Mystery surrounds 'lucky' hamster found dumped in Fife bin

The pet, which was fortunately found uninjured, was rescued form a bin in Abbeyview Park, West Dunfermline on 20 March.

Officials from the charity have said it is likely the hamster was abandoned, but they are appealing to the public for more information about its circumstances.

The animal is currently in the care of the charity’s rescue and rehoming centre and appears to be “unscathed” by its ordeal.

SSPCA animal rescue officer Catherine Atterton said: “This hamster was very lucky to be found when he was.

“The bin he was found in is a large metal bin which needs to be unlocked to be opened and emptied so we believe it’s very likely he was dumped in there.

“We appreciate that the person who left the hamster in the bin may have intended for the animal to be found but this is not the right way to give up an animal if you can no longer care for them.

“Thankfully, despite his ordeal, he appears to be unscathed and is now in the care of one of our animal rescue and rehoming centres where he is receiving the care he needs.

“We would like to find out what happened to this hamster.”
