The ominous pills were concealed in a small plastic capsule which the youngster picked up and took home after school on Tuesday.

After the alarm was raised by a worried parent, Police Scotland attended the family’s home and removed the item and its contents.

Police officers also conducted a thorough sweep of the home and have confirmed that the child in question has come to no harm.

The Royal High Primary School’s parent council later issued a warning to all parents telling them to ‘stay vigilant’ and reminding families that the situation could have been “much worse”.

The spokesperson from Police Scotland said: “Police in Edinburgh received a report after a Kinder Egg with an unknown substance inside was found on Tuesday, 1 December, 2020. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Edinburgh City Council has been contacted for comment.

The disturbing drugs discovery follows a similar incident last April when a Fife mum’s eight-year-old son found an identical children’s treat filled with tablets at a popular play park.

Stacey Thomson had taken Kynzli for a trip to Lochore Meadows in Lochgelly to feed the swans during the school holidays when he found a plastic capsule from the inside of a chocolate egg.

As he went to open it up, thinking there was a toy inside, his mum intervened and took it from him.

Inside were around a dozen pale blue tablets marked with the letter V – the anti-depressant Valium.

Stacey said at the time: “I would like other parents to be more vigilant when with their children at local play areas, regardless of their age.

“Although my son would never have touched what was inside, the same cannot be said for a child of a younger age."
