The day went positively swimmingly for the 25th anniversary celebrations at Levenmouth Pool on Sunday as the crowds donned their costumes and trunks for the big ‘splash’.

Staff at the leisure centre welcomed hundreds of Fifers for the special event marking a quarter of a century since the pool first opened its doors to the excited crowds back in February 1990.

The giant inflatable was out, the water canons poised and the adored water flume ready and waiting for locals and visitors alike one of Leven’s busiest attractions.

Doreen Crichton, duty manager at the pool, knows why it has stood the test of time and keeps the crowds coming in, with an average of 200,000 visitors every year.

“It’s a fun pool - we have the flume, the waves and the cannons - Leven pool is for families.

“We’re one of only two pools in Fife that have a flume and that keeps the families coming back.”

But it isn’t just a hit with the locals - Doreen says they regularly get tourists through the doors during holiday periods, and thanks to Fife Sports and Leisure Trust’s ‘Quid-a-Kid Swimming’ annual campaign, the pool welcomes hundreds of children every summer, come rain or shine.

For local youngsters, Levenmouth Pool is often their first experience in the water, with mother and baby classes starting from weeks old, to swimming classes for up to age 10.

“Because of the type of pool we are, we don’t do any swimming clubs, but the staff here encourage all of the kids to go on and progress at other Fife clubs,” said Doreen.

She added: “One of the best things about the pool is our staff. They are very good at encouraging the children, and a lot of our staff have been here for a long time. We get a lot of praise from customers about the staff as well.”

One such face many locals might recognise is cafe supervisor Katrina Mearns. She has worked in the cafe of the pool since it opened 25 years ago, and admits the time has just flown by.

“I never thought I would be here 25 years later! Never in a million years.

“But I just love the customers. And they keep coming back because of the staff - all of our customers say the staff are just the bee’s knees.”
