Members can get involved in a variety of ways, such as getting stuck into fundraising challenges to raise money for pioneering research, representing Alzheimer’s Research UK at events or spreading the word about the charity within their communities.

The charity is also looking for people who are happy to help make sure its fundraising events run smoothly. This could include stewarding, collecting donations, manning stalls, serving refreshments or cheering on fundraisers and giving a much-needed boost of morale.

Alzheimer’s Research UK volunteers play a crucial part in the fight against dementia, which currently affects nearly 70,000 people in Scotland alone.

Thomas Alford, from Dunoon, Argyll and Bute, has been volunteering for Alzheimer’s Research UK for two years. He said: “I find volunteering very rewarding – it’s nice to give something back.

“The Alzheimer’s Research UK team are really helpful and make you feel like you are part of something bigger, a movement to beat dementia. I enjoy helping at bucket collections, meeting the public and being able to tell people about the crucial work the charity does.

“My dad died with dementia, so it is a cause very close to my heart.”

Each fundraising group needs a minimum of three core members to fulfil the roles of chairperson, treasurer and secretary. Popular activities include coffee mornings, bric-a-brac sales, quiz nights and bucket collections.

April Davidson, Alzheimer’s Research UK regional fundraising officer for Scotland, said: “Dementia affects a huge proportion of the population – one in three people over 65 in the UK will die with some form of the condition. Only research can beat dementia, and we’re keen to get as many people involved as possible.

“Community fundraisers and volunteers play a hugely important role in the fight against dementia, both through raising funds and helping to spread awareness.”
