A Kirkcaldy woman who was awarded an OBE for her work in Libya, picked up her medal at the investiture at Buckingham Palace last Friday.

Gill Fraser, who is currently the Charge d’Affaires at the British Embassy in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, and honarary president of the British Chamber, where she represents the Queen and the UK government, received her award for her services to British interests in Libya as part of the Diplomatic Service in the New Year 2014 Honours List.

On arriving in Tripoli, the capital of Libya in 2012, Ms. Fraser led the Embassy response to a series of major crises in a very challenging and dangerous environment including the aftermath of the June 2012 attack on the British Ambassador’s convoy in Benghazi, when a close protection team member was badly wounded by a rocket propelled grenade.

She also led the UK response to the attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, and the bombing of the French Embassy in Tripoli.

It is for her hard work and dedication during that time that she was awarded an OBE.

Gill attended Kirkcaldy High School from 1983-1989 before studying at Edinburgh University. She then went on to study at Warwick University.

She has had a varied career since leaving university including working for the HM Treasury, the BBC, served at the Embassy in The Hague, was the deputy head in the Aghanistan department of the foreign office and worked as Deputy of Mission at the British Embassy in Tripoli, Libya.

The British Chamber spoke highly of Ms Fraser saying “It is an honour to have the privilege of working with Ms Fraser in Slovakia, and we are tremendously proud that her dedicated services have been acknowledged with an OBE.”

Speaking on the UK government website after finding out that she had been awarded an OBE, Gill said: “I am so honoured to be given this award.

“While challenging and difficult at times, I look back positively at my time in Libya and remember with great fondness the excellent team I had the pleasure to work with; it was a real team effort.”
