'˜Don't allow graffiti to spoil town centre'

The vandalism, or street art depending on which view you take, has appeared in recent weeks along the length of Hill Street on the back storage area doors of the former Tesco building as well as on the brickwork of the car park above the Postings and the steps leading from the shopping centre down to the High Street.

Around a dozen different areas, mainly doorways, have been spray painted with people’s names, two of the most prolific being ‘Nacho’ and ‘Sanek’ in various colours of paint.

And the graffiti has angered a number of shoppers and taxi drivers at the nearby Hill Street taxi rank.

One shopper, who did not wish to be named, said: “It looks awful. There’s no need for it and I hope they get caught soon.”

Another said: “It’s like some of the cities I’ve visited in Eastern Europe, which have lots of grafitti.”

A taxi driver at the nearby rank, who declined to give his name, added: “Because the building is lying empty it has become a target for vandals. There are no security guards looking after it any more.”

Bill Harvey, manager of Kirkcaldy’s Business Improvement District company Kirkcaldy4All, said: “Unfortunately there’s not a lot we can do about this as it is a matter for the police.

“A huge amount of work has gone into the area from various organisations including Growing Kirkcaldy, which is again trying to get Kirkcaldy into the Britain in Bloom competition which we did so well in last year, and it would be a pity if this was to spoil that.

“I would ask the public and taxi drivers who are out and about in the area to keep their eyes open and to report anything they see going on.

“These are just mindless actions of a few people and we don’t want it to spoil our town.”
