Drivers warned by police in Guardbridge

Officers have been keeping a lookout for drivers flouting traffic restrictions during major roadworks in the north east Fife village.

Most of the offences involve ignoring one-way signs and, earlier today (Thursday), Police Scotland reported that 110 drivers had so far been warned.

It added that 57 fixed penalty tickets had been issued “for various offences, including not obeying the ‘no entry’ restrictions at Pusk Road”, between Guardbridge and Balmullo.

The one-way regulation is in force as part of wider traffic management while a pipe is laid for St Andrews University between its green energy centre, at the former Guardbridge paper mill, and premises at North Haugh. The pipe will carry hot water from a biomass boiler to heat university buildings.

Guardbridge’s Main Street is set to be closed for several more weeks, which has created a seven-mile diversion for travellers between St Andrews and Dundee.

Ward officers are also continuing to have a presence at local schools to target driver behaviour and road safety at the beginning and end of the school day, enforcing general road safety in the villages.

Local councillor Tim Brett said: “I am pleased the police are taking action to deal with this issue and, while I appreciate that the present arrangements may be frustrating for many people, it is important that everyone obeys the traffic restrictions.”
